ACT-CIS Partylist Rep. Rowena Ni?a Taduran in her privilege speech on Monday, called for the enactment into law of House Bill 2476 or the “Media Workers’ Welfare Act”. The measure would ensure the professional and economic well-being of media workers. Taduran, a former broadcast journalist, said that while in pursuit of the truth, media workers are subjected to threats, harassment, and sometimes to violence. She added that media workers, united with the government in the war against COVID-19, have become “part of the so-called front-liners” that are exposed to health risks and hazards. In HB 2476, Taduran pushes for a comprehensive benefits package, security of tenure, and hazard pay due to the enormity of their occupational risk. Rep. Cristal Bagatsing (5th District, Manila), on the other hand, moved to empower the garments industry, which continues to face disruptions in its operations and mass lay-offs due to the pandemic. Bagatsing enjoined government agencies to carry out the Filipino First policy and prioritize local assets in supplying the country’s demand, particularly on face-masks and personal protective equipment.
